LumenArchitecture

Francesca Bastianini is a lighting designer in New York City with a Senior Designer with Lumen Architecture. The firm focuses on integrating lighting with architectural and interior spaces to enhance the environment and the user’s experience. The office works on varied project typologies and seeks to provide inspiring and functional spaces.  Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Francesca moved to the United States to attend Smith College, where she received her BA in Theatre and Psychology. Following her undergraduate work, Francesca earned a Masters degree in psychology while freelancing as a theatrical lighting designer for dance and theatre. Seeking a way to combine lighting and an individual’s experience of space, she transitioned to architectural lighting design by earning an MFA from Parsons the New School, where she completed a thesis that focused on creating lighting solutions for underserved populations.  Francesca has been active as part of the Designers Lighting Forum as a board member and a founding member of the lighting think‐tank PhoScope. She is also an active member of the IESNYC and IALD. Outside of Lumen Architecture, Francesca teaches lighting design in the Interior Design department at Pratt Institute and in the Lighting Program at Parsons the New School for Design.
